holidays in the grey city

Okay, so, let's be honest, the weirdest thing about Christmas in Dublin is that everyone says Happy Christmas!! and I've had to have several arguments with folks about why happy Christmas is just weird, but merry Christmas is jolly and correct.

We did tons of baking. More baking than cooking, as a certain Polish chap would point out to anyone. Don't tell me what you're baking, tell me what you're cooking.

We cooked: steak & veggies, mashed potatoes, quiche.
We baked: chocolate chip cookies and marble cheesecake.

That's all I can remember, but it seems like so much more. We watched lots of movies, talked a lot, gossiped some. Walked around the city on Christmas Day, which meant everything was pretty much deserted. We saw a bit of Polish Christmas Eve & Christmas. Lots of cabbage, pickled fish and vodka.

Even better, tomorrow we leave for Barcelona. Today is tying together loose ends and checking emails. Putting up the away message. Washing clothes and packing. Calling home and givin' a shout out to the loved ones.

We'll go to Andorra and see snow. I never though I'd miss it like this--but it just doesn't feel like Christmas without. I miss snowangels and snowmen. Snowball fights and icicles. I miss how bright and clean it looks when it first falls, before anyone gets to it. I miss playing with the dog in the snow and watching him hop around in it, trying to catch any snowball you'd throw and searching for the ones he missed.

Overall, it has been a good Christmas. Different, but good.

Now, New Years, I'm ready for that to knock my socks off.
